Heat-up of Glass Furnaces

Heat-up, Expansion Control and Cullet Fill

A new Glass furnace is required to be brought into production at a controlled rate of temperature increase. Excelsius have specially designed portable High Velocity Burner Units which are placed into the furnace at desginated points.

Incorporating the latest in technology Excelsius have a High Velocity Burner system that has a capacity of 6000 Nm3/h creating high furnace pressure and even heat distribution. An exceptional turndown ratio means the burners have the capability to ensure controlled temperature increases within the furnace that can be as little as +/- 1oC.

The same burner system is also used to ensure that other specific temperature requirements for a glass furnace are achieved whether this be a cooldown at a controlled rate or a hold hot to maintain temperature during partial repairs.

Temperatures during Heat Up Services are measured and recorded using Digital Recording equipment with Thermocouples located in the furnace to ensure accurate measurement throughout.

Excelsius will also monitor the movement of the furnace crown during temperature increase, using sensors & recording equipment. They will also carry out the physical adjustment of the rods on the superstructure.

Upon completion of construction or repair, a Glass Furnace shall be required to be charged with cullet at a controlled rate into the preheated melter until a level is reached that will allow the glass producer to start the in house charger system..

Excelsius are able to provide services for the charging of the glass into the melter with different options for doing this. The main options of cullet filling are by blowing or vibrating feeding methods.

Cullet Blowing and Vibrating  feeder units  are available in different lengths and sizes. Excelsius will discuss the requirements for cullet filling with the client and recommend and advise which type of unit should be used.

The cullet can be pre treated before charging to reduce  the possible damage to the inside of the furnace caused by small cullet particles or dust. The options for pre treating are to use vibrating table or rotating sieves or to insert a wetting system before the blower to damp down the cullet and reduce dust.
